Caring For Men's Skin

With Father’s Day fast approaching, we thought it was the perfect opportunity to shine a light on men’s skincare, and how best to approach this from a home regimen perspective as well as in-clinic treatments.

Physiologically speaking, there are several small differences between men’s and women’s skin that can be noted when selecting the ideal skin treatment regime:

More prone to build-up
The first is that men tend to have larger pores, and oil glands that are more active than their female counterparts. This can result in a faster buildup of blocked pores (which can lead to infection, ie. breakouts) blackheads, and congestion. This can easily be corrected with regular in-clinic treatments designed to deeply cleanse and extract, twice-daily cleansing at home with a suitable cleanser, and for those experiencing significant congestion or problematic skin, AHA and BHA-based ingredients to gently dissolve dead skin cells, penetrate pore blockages, and destroy bacteria.

Skin can often be thicker
Men often have a thicker dermis than women, providing that nice strong, resilient complexion. However, the collagen fibres that provide that thickness, structure and support to the dermis can deplete faster than it does in women. This can result in sudden onset signs of ageing that appear faster and more unexpectedly than most men anticipate. To combat this, the best strategy is early prevention, utilising anti-ageing ingredients and treatments to address declining collagen levels before they are detected on the outside.

Facial hair
Beard or no beard, facial hair plays a significant role in a male’s skin health. Regular shaving can be harsh on the skin and result in sensitisation or shaving rash, which can be resolved with topical soothing agents. Those with beards of course skip over the entire area, unfortunately leaving the skin underneath without a proper clean or treatment with facials or topical skincare.

These differences, while noted according to scientific evidence, are of course generalised and based on a majority, with plenty of men being exempt from some of these rules. The best practice is always to approach the skin according to its individual needs and behaviours, as opposed to categorisation. This is why in-clinic treatments, which include expert assessment and diagnosis from an experienced practitioner are so crucial - to ensure you are given a solution that is tailored for you.

Our most popular men’s treatments
When it comes to clinical treatments and homecare, there are certainly a few crowd favourites among our male clientele.

Deep cleansing
HydraFacial is the treatment of choice for deep cleansing, detoxifying, clearing away buildup and extracting stubborn blackheads that many men are prone to. It’s fast, simple, extremely effective, pain-free, and with no down-time.
For at-home, it’s our iS Clinical Cleansing Complex - this lightweight cleansing gel is powerful, yet gentle enough for hypersensitive skin, containing resurfacing ingredients to exfoliate and de-clog pores without stripping.

Skin firmness
Ultraformer is our advanced collagen-rebuilding treatment to restore dermal thickness and visibly tighten skin on the surface. For firming, collagen-promoting topical skincare, our male favourite would have to be iS Clinical Super Serum Advanced +. Not only does this stimulate fibroblast cells in order to promote collagen, it’s a superior multi-tasker. Plenty of men prefer a simple home routine, so this ticks a lot of boxes. It offers powerful antioxidant protection in order to prevent cellular damage leading to premature ageing, it brightens and smooths skin’s tone and texture, and also helps to reduce scarring. This is a big drawcard for men experiencing stubborn acne scarring that aren’t yet ready to consider cosmetic treatments such as needling.

Shaving rash
One of our absolute favourite treatments for calming inflammation and strengthening the skin is our Healite treatment, as LED light has been shown to significantly reduce inflammatory mediators in the skin and speed up the healing process. This is why it is often used post-surgery, and has been used for decades in the treatment of sports injuries and joint and muscle pain. We also have an incredible topical calming agent ideal for any type of inflammation, skin irritancy, or sensitisation, including shaving rash. Our iS Clinical Hydra Cool Serum is designed to rejuvenate, hydrate, and visibly soothe the skin, offering a pleasant cooling sensation to inflamed, blemished or even sunburned skin.
